CCI Opelika One Year Bible Reading 2010

1.2.10

Genesis 3-4:26 1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

John – Satan asks us questions to try to trick us about God commandments.

4 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”
He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

John – We all question what is our responsibility about others…

4 26 And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh.[c] Then men began to call on the name of the LORD.

John – Even from that time we knew to call on the Lord, He is needed by ALL human beings… So we should continually call on Him!

Matthew 2:13-3:6 2 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside into the region of Galilee. 23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, “He shall be called a Nazarene.”

John – Fear of harm, helped to fulfill the prophecy, could God not use our fears to move us in His direction?

Psalm 2:1-12 11 Serve the LORD with fear,
And rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son,[b] lest He[c] be angry,
And you perish in the way,
When His wrath is kindled but a little.
Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

John – Blessed are ALL those….. who trust in Him…. Lord show me how to trust more and more in Him and not in my natural strength…

Proverbs 1:7-9 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Strong's H3374 - yir'ah

יִרְאָה

Transliteration

yir'ah

Pronunciation

yir·ä' (Key)

1) fear, terror, fearing

a) fear, terror

b) awesome or terrifying thing (object causing fear)

c) fear (of God), respect, reverence, piety

d) revered

John – RESPECT and REVERENCE is the beginning of KNOWLEDGE, you only listen to those whom you RESPECT and have REVERENCE for….

LAURA LOU (NEXT SECTION) ON JAN.2

Ge: 3:2 Eve told the serpent God said...."You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die. " -

Laura: This sounds like she had thought about what God said enough that she had actually added the don't touch it part as an extra layer of trying to protect herself. Like she got in fear or herself that if she left it at don't eat, she may actually eat, so she just decided to stay away from it all together. Faith (everything that does not come from faith is sin) is the opposite of fear.

John - Or the man told here in his own knowledge trying to protect her, if you don't touch it you sure cant eat it..... She could have been believing a lie....

Laura : Ge 3:4 is the tactic the enemy uses....when he gets us to start rationalizing and reasoning with him, we get in confusion and then he puts the lie on us...."GOD IS WITH HOLDING SOMETHING GOOD FROM YOU"

Ge: 3:4 4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

Laura: I think it is weird that Adam didn't put up a fight at all. He didn't say Eve we shouldn't.....I don't get this part. Where was Adam's brain?

John - Probably in "self protection mode" if God gave him one wife, He would probably give him another if she died, then when she didn't he could have questioned GOds integrity...

Ty: Maybe it was Adam's curiosity. I wonder about the idea of the trees/fruit ... Is this a metaphor, and does it relate to some of the metaphors that use the idea of fruit/planting that were used by Jesus in his teachings? What is interesting to me is that Adam must have experienced uncertainty. If Adam was certain of who God is and whose he was (God's son), then what would have motivated him to eat the fruit? I wonder if Adam also misunderstood his purpose? I know I struggle with uncertainty after the fall, but is it possible that Adam struggled with the same thing before the fall? Naturally speaking, I know I would have been tempted to eat the fruit to gain the knowledge and understanding. I think we are obsessed with certainty, but what is truly certain? It makes me think about the scientific method that we were taught in school and why so many are persauded by the laws and theories of science versus the mystery of creation. We naturally want to follow the steps of the sceintific method when we are faced with uncertainty (Check out wikipedia Scientific Method: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method). This is the process that scientists have used to conclude that the Big Bang thory and the idea of evolution is a law, not just a theory. As humans, we do not accept mysteries very well, especially the mysteries of God, we long for a better explanation. If I put myself in Adam's position in present terms, then I would be lieing if I were to say that I would not be tempted by the idea of gaining the knowledge of my future, my purpose, and a further understanding of the priniples of his creation. Especially if my wife had already eaten the fruit and nothing was visibly different about her. If Eve ate first, wouldn't she have felt ashamed and immediately responded to here nakedness? This is interesting to me too, because it wasn't until they both ate that they realized they were naked and ashamed. I wonder what the significance of this is?

11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

Laura: I wonder how God felt in this moment. I wonder why he asked this if he knew they had eaten...their comment that they were naked gave it away to him. Because before they didn't know that. I wonder if God with holds certain knowledge from himself, so that when he was looking for them, he really went just desiring them, to be with them, and had no idea he was going to find they had sinned.

John - I think God doesn't have to withhold anything from Himself, He does struggle with knowing anything, He saw it form the beginning.... We struggle with knowing because it does look like what we want and we can't see the end, He can...

Gen 3:16 Unto the woman 802 he said 559 , I will greatly 7235 multiply 7235thy sorrow 6093 and thy conception 2032; in sorrow 6089 thou shalt bring forth 3205 children 1121; and thy desire 8669 [shall be] to thy husband 376, and he shall rule 4910 over thee.
[Select for Copy; Double click to (de-)select all] Gen 4:7 If 518 thou doest well 3190 , shalt thou not be accepted 7613? and if thou doest not well 3190 , sin 2403 lieth 7257 at the door 6607. And unto thee [shall be] his desire 8669, and thou shalt rule 4910 over him.

1) desire, longing, craving

a) of man for woman

b) of woman for man

c) of beast to devour

Laura: I hate this part. My desire will be for my husband. To rule over him, control him. overtake him....just like the sin that was lying at the door of Cain. God told Cain he could rule over it, but he ended up killing Abel (so sin did overtake cain). I think ultimately this is the competition of WHOSE IN CHARGE. Will I submit to my husband...because there is something in me that wants to DOMINATE. And i don't think in a mean way sometimes....it is like a woman wars with if she is safe, if she can really trust her husband to lead, if she is going to be abandoned or left behind....should i let my independence go because it is the last wall of defense i have...to truly trust someone that has the power to alter the outcome of my life....(at least that is the lie we war with).

John - Maybe before the fall it wasn't so important for her and Adam to have separate names, they were both Adam(s) that describe what they were not who, they were one... the woman came out of the man....After the fall we all want our own identity for protection and provision sake... God still deal with only (2) Adams..... The first and the Last.... The last being Jesus...

Laura: I think this is a powerful statement that john wrote above.

20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.

Laura: Why did Eve just now get a new name....God called her Woman...I think this has nothing to do with the fall. This is Adam speaking life over his wife. They got to a new place in their marriage to do something great together and Adam spoke life over his woman....Go Adam!

MT 2:13 - THE LORD SPOKE TO JOSEPH IN A DREAM. GET UP AND TAKE THE CHILD AND HIM MOTHER AND ESCAPE TO EGYPT: T

Laura: This is as Herod was getting ready to murder all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity 2 years old and younger. It is amazing how God speaks to us. Take our current situation today with the economy, terrorism, our nation. I believe God can speak to us the places of protection, the exact right things to do at the exact right time.
