CCI Opelika One Year Bible Reading 2010

5.11.10

1 Samuel 10-11:15
John 6:43-71

6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

John - Life (true life, abundant eternal life) is found in the Spirit, the flesh (our own way, selfishness) profits nothing. The words (Jesus words) are life and Spirit, in His words you will be norished, built up, encouraged and sent fort.

Psalm 107:1-43
Proverbs 15:1-3

15:1 A soft answer turns away wrath,
But a harsh word stirs up anger.

2 The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly,
But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.
3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place,
Keeping watch on the evil and the good.

John - Two points are made in this proverb, (1) how we answer others determines much of what happens, a soft word turns away wrath, but a harsh word (not soft) stirs up anger, which will only cause more conflict. (2) When we think of what God is watching it is easy to think He is looking out for evil, but Gods eyes are on the evil and THE GOOD, in EVERY place!

  1. The soft answer that turns away wrath, comes from patience and a desire for reconciliation. If I have to be the one that is right then I will not use this principle. If I am willing to be wrong even if I am right, then I am ready to use this beautiful ability that God gives to us. I encourage all of you to go into your day with the decision that you will speak kindly, softly, patiently! and if someone offers to play "ball " with you, choose to be a spectator!!! Be Blessed today.

  2. I Samuel 12: 22-24, Samuel is so encouraging with his words of Truth from God here. To know that the one true God will never leave you or turn from you and that he CHOSE you is pretty powerful. But he goes on to give us some keys to celebrate that grace/gift from GOd. First of all, To never cease to pray for each other. We are called to stand for one another, to love each other and the best way to do this is to never cease to pray for your brother or sister in the Lord. When you stay in constant prayer for the needs of another it keeps you humble and unable to be so quick to judge. Next, to fear the Lord. NOT like a scary God, but in honor, and awe. He is greater, more awesome and so much more cool than the president of the US or a movie star! Think about how you would respond to that situation and take it up a notch! Serve Him with ALL your heart. Don't be tossed around by your thoughts and others opinions. Ultimately the way that you do all this, is to always remember the great things He has done for you. It sound cliche, but you can start with " Thank you for the breath in my lungs this morning Father." Just as I tell my children daily, "There are things that you receive from your fathers hand that are gifts, not rights." We should always know that God is gift giver, not a rights provider! Be Blessed today as you pray for others, choose God, and remember who He is and what He has done for you.:)

  3. 1 samuel 10...
i feel like i am on the edge of my seat watching a movie with this book...how cool that God makes everything so yummy to read!!!! one thing that caught my eye out of chapter 10 was this:
25 Then Samuel explained to the people the behavior of royalty, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before the LORD.

so i wonder what in the world this said...did it give an okay for many wives, gifts to the king, did it set up the people for a kingdom type mindset? did it say how he was to lead? very interesting...i'm gonna google it...

  4. John 6:63 What does it mean to "have life", and when does one truly "profit"? To have breath is not the definition of having life.To have breath is merely to be in existence.Jesus said,I came that you may have "life" and that more abundantly;he spoke this to those who were already in existence. To have life as Christ was speaking is to walk in love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, long suffering, meekness, gentleness, self-control, and life eternal.Jesus said what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul.To profit in this case has nothing to do with one's own assets or possessions alone, but it is what accompanies those things in his own heart.I am truly profitable when my heart is as pure as the gold I possess.

  5. Prov. 15:1 A soft answer is not necessarily words spoken in a low tone, but it is to speak aggressively the truth over one's own circumstances, also to and in the life of others. We can destroy with the most subtle and most innocent sounding words, yet their mission was to kill when they went forth from our lips as arrows.
